Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Photobucket

Tonight, Don’t be Afraid of the Dark (and a side of kettle corn) was on the menu. I’d wanted to see this movie last year when it came out, but movies are expensive, yo. Anyway, we saw it on Netflix and decided to check it out. As I was watching, there was a running commentary going through my mind, and about halfway through I realized that I should probably be taking notes if I intend to write a review. Whoops.

This is a remake of an older made-for-tv movie. The story is of a little girl named Sally who moves in with her father, Alex and his girlfriend, Kim (played by Mrs. Tom Cruise herself). Shortly after moving in with them, Sally starts hearing voices and seeing little shadow creatures who are afraid of the light.

After the terrific opening scene with shoddy dental work and an old man being eaten while trying to save his son,  the movie started off kind of slowly, and despite the contemporary setting, it seemed awfully similar to another movie directed by Guillermo Del Toro (I’m looking at you, Pan’s Labyrinth >:(   ), what with the little girl moving into a new home with one parent and one sort-of step parent. It was kind of creepy when Sally first started talking to the little “fairies”. I mean, if you’re drunk and the lights are all turned out, anyway.

Jokes aside, it seemed like a pretty solid premise until they actually show the creatures. I mean, half bald rats aren’t scary, they’re cute, in a sickly way. If the creatures looked more like the drawings made by Sally and the old man from the beginning, then there might have been more of a fright factor to it. All in all, I was pretty disappointed and it was hard to suspend my disbelief when it comes to the lack of common sense owned by the characters. I’d give it 2.5 out of 5 skulls. Better luck next time, I guess.

Anonymous Aliens?

One of the first things that came up during my daily news surf this morning was an article on Examiner that linked to this video. In the video, we have a floating CGI Guy Fawkes mask with a GlaDos-esque computer generated voice. S/he tells us that Anonymous has acquired some information from the “illuminarti”, something that the powers that be would like it if we didn’t know. The author of the article linked above thinks that the information is about UFOs, (possibly due to references of “those which the ancients called the gods” and a few other things).

To me, it sounds like they’re saying that they’re about to unplug us from the Matrix, as there is mention of our perception of reality being tested and shifted. Also, they state that there is “visual and verbal” evidence  I am all for conspiracy theories and all, but I’m willing to bet that this video is either a one off (for the lulz) or the start of a new ARG. It’d be wonderful if they were really about to pull the plug on extra-terrestrial secrets and human contact with ET, but I guess only time will tell. Either way, take a peek at the video for yourself and come up with your own conclusions. I, for one, will be staying tuned to see if anything comes of this.

Our New Home

There’s been another move, only this time it was a cyber move rather than a physical one. Mass Horror has finally moved to it’s own hosting and domain. Welcome to http://www.masshorror.com! Please excuse the boxes and packing tape while we get settled.

Greetings from space

Not really. Actually, greetings from Richmond, VA. That’s right, we here at Mass Horror have moved again. There was also a keyboard mishap that led to not being able to type much for the past few months. Luckily for anyone who actually reads this blog, I’ve been writing  and formulating new articles/ideas on paper, so things should pick up soon. I’ve also procured steady employment, which means I don’t have to feel guilty spending my free time researching and then writing about the paranormal. But what it also means (and what I’m most excited about) is that in the near future I should be able to turn this blog into what it was always supposed to be: a first hand account of  various paranormal/horror related places and legends written by a “skeptic”. So, that’s a win on all fronts.

Virginia is a nice place to explore haunted happenings because of all of the revolutionary and civil war history that happened here. I’ve also found a few decent UFO sighting stories, and there’s a “Richmond Vampire” legend that some of you might find interesting. I’m very excited to start writing about these  and investigate them myself. Here’s to hoping I’ll be less of a procrastinator and write more regularly. Out of all of the stuff that I do in my spare time, this blog has to be my favorite, and it also has the most potential. Anyway, until next time.

Umbrella Corp. and Inserted Evil

So, has anyone heard of this “Inserted Evil” movement? Over at their website  and forum they’ve been making some very serious allegations against the Umbrella Corporation. Their leader, only known as “Ian Sider” claims that he’s in the know on some very bad stuff that they’re doing. Every week he’s releasing what he refers to as “clues” and “evidence” to prove his theories to the world. Supposedly he’ll also be sending certain bits of evidence to people who prove to be helpful in his quest.

Well, being someone who realizes that there’s two sides to every argument, I’m going to be attempting to get an interview with an Umbrella rep. to set the story straight. They have their contact info on the main website for their company, so it shouldn’t be too hard. Wish me luck everyone!
